Spags: Gateway to the West

After visiting with many teams about their head coaching vacancies, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is now in charge of the St. Louis Rams. With the exception of the Rams, Raiders, and Jets, teams filled their head coaching jobs. Needless to say, I thought we would have been lucky and had Spags for another year. Although Spags received a promotion, I think the Giants stumbling finish in the last quarter of the season dimmed his resume. In their final four games, the Giants were 1-3. Two of the games were on national television. In both games against Dallas and Carolina, the Giants defense was mediocre. Under the bright lights of these two nationally televised games, I am sure ownerships had their eyes fixated on the Giants. A spotlight was on Spags. It is my assumption, they were not enthusiastic about the defensive play of the Giants. Even in the playoff loss to the Eagles, the Giants defense was not spectacular. In addition,in their last four regular season games, the defense was giving up big plays. Giants allowed runs of 30, 38, 23, 20 and 67 yards and pass plays of 40, 32, 34, 35, 60, 41 and 54 yards. Against the Eagles in the Divisional Playoff game, the Eagles converted the 3rd and 20 which was a pass for 21 yards. Then later in the game, McNabb hit DeSean Jackson for a 48 yard pass play. These are the reasons I think Spags was not scooped up earlier by a team looking for a head coach.

Now that Spags is gone, I think it is going to be interesting to see who fills the vacant defensive coordinator spot. I wonder if Coughlin would want to continue with Spags' scheme or go in another direction. I think Steve Spagnuolo was a magnificent defensive coordinator for the Giants and I think he will be an outstanding head coach.

Good luck Spags! I am going to miss you.
