Game plan was the key to the Saints success
Imagine driving down a road. Then all of a sudden you hear a thunderous noise. You think to yourself, "What happened?" I think this is what the Giants defense encountered. With a week off, Saints Head Coach Sean Payton devised a game plan which would put his team in a fantastic position to win. After winning the opening coin toss, the Saints revved up their potent offense. Once the Saints offense was humming on all cylinders, the Giants defense never could come up for air. After two possessions, the Saints were front runners taking a 14-0 lead. They never trailed thrashing the Giants 48-27. Payton, a former Giants offensive coordinator, knows the Giants well. It is my judgment, Payton knew the smart way to defeat the Giants was to get into a track meet game. I do not think the Saints have a team which can grind out a victory. In 2007 NFC Championship game in Chicago, the Saints offense sputtered in the cold at Soldier Field. There offense never got into rhythm. As a result, they lost 39-14. Speaking of the Giants history, if one goes back the Giants glory years of the 50's, the Giants were a black and blue team. Although the game has evolved, former head coach Bill Parcells (1983-1990) has stated, "Power wins football games." Give credit to Payton for devising this winning formula to defeat the Giants. Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora concurs with this thinking. "It was one hundred percent Drew Brees and their schemes, definitely not their offensive line at all," Umenyiora said. "They play-action passed, and whenever they do that, it makes us play the run, and that's how they were able to keep us on our heels pretty much the whole game. The offensive line is good, but I definitely give credit to Sean Payton and Drew Brees for that game plan." Giants CB Terrell Thomas adds, “Everybody’s trying to make a play for the next person instead of just doing their job,” Thomas said. “And it burned us in the end, especially since we were going against a good, talented offense. They went up-tempo and we couldn’t slow them down at all. … A lot of times, it happens in football, naturally. This is Week 6, we’re very young and we’re still learning each other. This is a good experience as a defense. We learn from it and we know we have to play together as a defense.” Up tempo... Saints QB Drew Brees has said, "Getting off to a quick start was critical." Thus far, the Saints have never trailed in any of the games in which they have played. This week the Saints travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins. Miami's Head Coach Tony Sparano is a disciple of Bill Parcells. It is my judgment, Sparano with some help from Bill will devise a game plan to slow down the Saints offense. I think the Dolphins will find a way to win on Sunday. As for the Giants, I think they were humbled and will play excellent defense against Arizona on Sunday Night Football.
