Open thread: Should Mara retain Coughlin?

After two consecutive weeks of uninspired and woeful football, the Giants ended the 2009 season on a sour note. For a team who had aspirations of getting back to the Super Bowl, the Giants finished a mediocre 8-8. From a PR standpoint, Giants co-owner John Mara has to get rid of Coughlin. If he keeps Coughlin as head coach, during the off season and up until the regular season, the media will focus negatively on Coughlin instead of the new stadium. Therefore, if they hire a new head coach, there will be positive media attention. Clearly, the Giants would favor positive media attention. Especially since the Jets and not the Giants made the playoffs. A new mantra for the 2010 Giants would be a new coach, a new stadium, and a new beginning.

What do you think?

Update: Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio thinks Giants should consider firing Coughlin.

We agree.

i would have to agree with you.

the only good news is that almost the 11 games that effected the giants draft order went their way: 8 positive [sf, atl, nyj, car, hou, tenn, balt, nyg], 2 negative [jac & den--but only 1 for the 1st round-den], and 1 split [pitt-mia]. overall, quite fortunate.

that's the ray of light in that disaster of a game.
